Many people who are not familiar with Gerber knives are surprised to learn that the United States government is their largest customer. The United States Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force and National Guard all have the option of carrying Gerber legendary blades. The FBI and CIA are also big fans of these razor sharp folding and tactical knives. The military goes through great lengths to ensure that the equipment supplied to troops is the highest quality and most durable. It's no surprise that Gerber Tactical knives are purchased more than any other brand.
Fire, police and rescue as well as SWAT teams across the nation have come to appreciate the rugged durability of these American made military, hunting, folding knives and pocketknives. Although thousands of police officers across the country carry a Gerber knife it is a misconception that they carry them for self defense. Just like you and I, the police in most cases use their knife as an everyday tool for countless purposes. Note: Some models are manufactured in foreign countries but most are made right here in the USA.
Choosing the right Gerber knife: There are several hundred different styles which are manufactured with specific purposes in mind. Selecting the knife that's best for you is not difficult. The first decision you have to make is what style knife blade you prefer. Fine edge or a combination of fine edge and serrated. There are numerous models that have the blade ground with both features. On a combination blade, the first section from the tip down is ground with a fine edge with the remaining portion of the blade ground with a serrated edge. Generally speaking, fine edge Gerber knife blades excel at slicing while serrated blades are excellent for sawing. If you are going to cut open a box that just arrived in the mail then you will use the tip of the fine edge blade for this purpose. Conversely, if you are working on a weekend project and have to cut a small wooden dowel then the serrated portion of the blade is perfect for that kind of task.
Many customers ask: "If the blade comes with fine edge and serrated, why would anyone want to own just a fine edge knife blade with no serration?" In general - selecting a knife with a fine edge blade has its benefits and drawbacks. If the entire blade is a fine edge surface then it will be easier to sharpen. Knife blades with a full length fine edge are very popular but you will be giving up the ability to use the knife for sawing things such as small tree branches etc. Although the serrated section of a combination blade rarely needs sharpening, the need will arise to sharpen the fine edge section of the blade. This can be a bit more tricky then sharpening a Gerber knife blade that has a continuous fine edge. As a rule of thumb - if you do not think that you will be using your knife for a lot of sawing then full fine edge blades are the best choice. If you are doing a lot of hunting, camping, hiking or are involved in survival situations then a combination fine edge and serrated blade can be indispensable.
Personalizing your Gerber knife: Gunther Gifts offers personalized custom engraving on many styles. If the model you are interested in is offered with an engraved blade or handle, you will see a box entitled:
