Buck blades are sharp right out of the box and they hold their edge longer than most. It's always been true because Buck designs knives with the end use in mind. They match the proper steel to the knife. Buck has proprietary, time-tested edging technology and heat-treating processes in place to ensure you receive top quality products
Buck has three main types of blade steels in production:
S30V - This steel is used when a superb combination of edge retention, toughness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance is required. S30V steel is hardened to a standard Rc 59-60.
154CM - Fantastic corrosion resistance and excellent edge retention for heavy cutting applications. Hardened to a standard Rc 59-61.
420HC - Buck's standard steel which keeps pricing down. Good corrosion and wear resistance in addition to edge retention and re-sharpenability. 420HC is a Buck standard and a typical knife industry standard. For best performance of this steel Buck hardens it to a standard Rc 58.
S30V and 154CM are considered high-end steels and are usually found on limited edition or more expensive knife models. 420HC is the most common, as well as 440A. 420HC and 440A are high quality steels with alloy blends which deliver the perfect characteristics for knives - corrosion and wear resistance combined with holding an edge and the ability to re-sharpen.
